Tubal Ligation Reversal

Tubal Ligation Reversal
What is Tubal Ligation Reversal?

Tubal ligation is the most effective method to avoid getting pregnant. By disconnecting the fallopian tubes,  the sperm not able to reach the egg, a very effective method for sterilization. Tubal Ligation Reversal is the opposite, it gives women that 2nd chance of getting a natural pregnancy after tubal ligation surgery. The tubes can be untied, re-connected, or un-clipped. It'll depend on what technique was used during your tubal ligation. The objective is to reconnect the inflow of liquid between both ends of the tube so a woman's egg can pass freely via the fallopian tubes. This way, the tubes allowing the eggs to travel naturally, and the sperms are able to get into the egg. Age, technique used during tubal ligation surgery, current ovulation & sperm test results as well as overall health of the patient are key indicators if Tubal Ligation Reversal right for you.

How is a Tubal Ligation Reversal performed at Hospital de la Familia?

The surgery is performed under Regional Blockage and IV sedation and usually takes 1 hour. General anesthesia is also available.  The surgery starts by sanitizing your surgical areas and using a small incision ( 8 cm approx ) in your belly button. The incision might be larger depending on your weight. We use a laparoscope initially to see if there are any adherencies visually before making the incision. The incision is approximately 8 cm long in your pelvic ( bikini line area ). If you've had C-sections previously we could use the same scar line to avoid a new incision. Microscopic instruments are used to facilitate the observations and reversal techniques used during the surgery. Once either the Clips are removed, tube re-attached or untied, we do a Blue Dye test to make sure liquid gets through the tube and the tubes are unblocked. Surgery is then finalized by cleaning the area and closing the incision, mostly with Monocryl ( Dissolvable stitches ). Surgery is then concluded and patients are sent to the recovery room.

Next Steps

Step 1 - It’s highly recommended for you to get an anti-mullerian test ( Ovulation test ) to see if you have enough eggs to obtain a probability of a natural pregnancy. You can get this test with your local gynecologist or fertility center. The test is usually a blood test on Day 3 of your cycle. Your partner should do a Sperm count test as well to make sure everything is well from his end.
