What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy the surgical removal of a women's uterus performed by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total or partial. Total would be the removing the body, fundis, and cervix of the uterus. It is often called a Complete Hysterectomy. A partial would be the removal of the uterine body while leaving the cervix intact. A Partial Hysterectomy is also called a supracervical hysterctomy. It is the most commonly performed gynecological surgical procedure that is not birth related.

How is Hysterectomy surgery performed at Family Hospital?

Hysterectomies at the Family Hospital are performed on a weekly and at times daily basis. The incision can be performed through the abdomen or the vagina, depending on what your doctor would recommend. It can be performed laparoscopically or through minimally invasive incisions. The recovery in the hospital should be 1-2 nights. It is normal for patients to feel a bit fuzzy the day after surgery, and a little bleeding is normal. The procedure takes 1-2 hours and it can be done via General Anesthesia or Regional Blockage with IV sedation. Before finalizing the surgery our specialist will double check around your uterus to see if any abnormalities or adherence. Keep in mind, Hospital de la Familia began as a hospital dedicated to women's services in 2003. The majority of the shareholders of Hospital de la Familia are gynecologists, which gives the explanation as to why the hospital inaugural name in 2003 was Hospital de la Mujer ( Women's Hospital ). All Women services treatments are our most common procedures. We are very confident that you will be safe getting your Hysterectomy at the Family Hospital.

FAQ's

1) Can I get a Hysterectomy if I am under 40?
Yes, we would need to review your case. We might require a Psychological Evaluation
to make sure you understand that getting a Hysterectomy means the inability to carrying children
in the future as well as other changes in your body.

2) How do I know if I am having a complication or infection?
Infections are rare, but the 1st symptom would be a sense of feeling sick, having a fever,
vomiting or a dark/purplish color in the incision. Extreme vaginal or incision bleeding is also not normal.
If you feel you are having a complication, send pictures to your Case Manager. If you are feeling sick
or have a fever, go to your local hospital or medical center for assistance.

3) Can I freeze eggs before Hysterectomy?
If you are still ovulating, yes. This would require an IVF treatment. Contact your Case Manager for more details.

4) Do I need to come back for a follow-up consultation?
If you live driving distance, we would love to see you again after 1 week for a follow up. Otherwise,
you do not need to come back we can follow up via Phone & Emails.
