Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric Sleeve
What is the Gastric Sleeve?

The Gastric Sleeve, also called Sleeve Gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15-20% of its original size by surgically removing a large portion of the stomach, following the major curve. The open edges are then attached together with surgical staples to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape. The procedure permanently reduces the size of the stomach but can grow to its original size if not following a balanced diet.  The procedure is performed Laparoscopically and is not reversible. The Gastric Sleeve has been the most popular method of weight loss surgery practiced worldwide.

How is Gastric Sleeve surgery performed at Family Hospital?

Since 2006, our surgeons have performed thousands of Gastric Sleeves to patients all over Canada, the US, Mexico, Europe, and Oceana. The surgery is performed under General Anesthesia and it takes approximately 1 hour. Our team will begin by sanitizing your entire body and organizing the preparations. The surgery is performed laparoscopically and there is a maximum of 6 incisions in your abdominal area, each approximately 1/2-3/4 of an inch wide. The scarring in the incisions will vanish visibility with time but it can take over a year. Before finishing the surgery, a leakage checkup is performed carefully followed by closing you up, finalizing the intervention.  Considering you will be left with 15-20% of its previous size, It's
important to follow a liquid diet before and after the surgery allowing smoother digestion to the new stomach. Full instructions will be provided before departure
